When the .NET universal top-level domain extension was initially introduced in 1985, along with the first domains on the World Wide Web, it was meant to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure firms. In view of the fact that there were no special stipulations about the usage of the TLD, though, dot NET domains were purchased and used for various purposes and by many people.
